While colors and mark-making can be an efficient way to tell about light and shadows hitting a subject, I chose to use mark-making reflective of my subject, Madison, and how she creates. Madison is an artist herself and uses highly colorful and gestural mark-making. I wanted her portrait to convey her style, so I used a 2-inch brush for the whole thing, making it impossible to get too caught up in detail. "Madison" was the first piece I got genuinely loose with and I know it still influences my process.
